I am a 1980 graduate of C.E. Murray High School. I graduated Salutatorian of my HS class and went on to complete by Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology with a minor in Business and Biology, my M.Ed. in Student Development and Counseling at the University of South Carolina, Columbia Campus, and my Ed.S. and Ed.D. degrees in Educational Leadership from South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, SC.

This is the 40th anniversary year of my graduation from C.E. Murray High School. I treasure every memory I have from my years being a student at C.E. Murray High School. It was there that I gained my love for reading, as the librarian, Mrs. Spry would give me a couple of new books to read each week, and I did not dare disappoint her. It was there that Dr. Murray taught me life lessons that I carry with me today, the ability to get up in front of a group and speak with authority, humility and grace. It was there that so many teachers poured their knowledge into me, Dr. Frankie Keels Williams, Dr. Janice Gamble, and so many others. It was there that I found my love for literature, from Mrs. King and yes, Mrs. Murray. I still remember the poem we all had to memorize and all recite in front of the class: “To The Virgins to Make Much of Time, by Robert Herrick.” It reminds me that time waits for no one.

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
   Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today
   Tomorrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
   The higher he’s a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
   And nearer he’s to setting.

That age is best which is the first,
   When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
   Times still succeed the former.

Then be not coy, but use your time,
   And while ye may, go marry;
For having lost but once your prime,
   You may forever tarry.

One thing I do know for sure is, “Life does not come with an instruction manual. No one holds the knowledge to what life can become for you.” Obstacles will come your way as you navigate life, as they did and do for me and everyone else. Yet, this I know for sure, “The Comeback can always be STRONGER than the Setback, if you will it to be and take the necessary actions to make it to be.

For me, I chose to live life Sagaciously! Shrewdly and Boldly! Always Forward! Always Grateful!

I know this year is one for the memories books that no one could have ever imaged. I hope for at least one graduate from Lane, SC that this scholarship will make a difference in your life. I give it in honor of the Class of 1980 and the Class of 2020!

Best Wishes,

DrDonna, South Carolina School Counselor of the Year, 2020!
